While tourism is a sector that employs more women than any other sector, it has also been critiqued for reinforcing gender inequalities. The persistent gender inequalities in tourism are perpetuated by the long-held patriarchal systems, structures, and norms that define many societies of the developing world. This chapter highlights the gender constraints faced by rural Ugandan women tourism entrepreneurs, and their expressed priority needs necessary for strengthening their entrepreneurial opportunities. It also suggests a gender-transformative approach to addressing the underlying gender inequalities prevalent in the community. Drawing on qualitative methods, findings are based on two women groups (Ride 4 a woman and Buhoma women's group) whose members are actively implementing community-based tourism initiatives. The chapter opens new avenues for addressing gender inequalities in the tourism sector.
