One of the characteristic elements of the ancient municipia, whose inhabitants received the Roman citizenship before the Social War, is the maintenance of their own laws and institutions, i.e. “legibus suis et suo iure utentes” according to a well-known statement of Aulus Gellius. This fact explains the original title of the high magistrates of these towns of Latium : dictator, praetores and aediles. This paper aims to provide an overview of these three types of magistrates in the ancient municipia of Latium during the Republic and the Empire. Thus, we will analyse their historical development and their functions in each of these towns in order to define the nature, the sphere of competence and the relations of these magistracies with the rest of the civic and religious offices of the city.
