Selected experiences in the occurrence and control of contamination and various other sources of error are described and discussed in the context of the threat they pose to the reliability of analytical data. The problems arising in the whole process from planning of experiments and collection of environmental samples through handling and radiochemical manipulations to the ultimate interpretation of results are considered along with a number of options for improving quality in the measurement of environmental radioactivity.
