A low-level high-purity-Ge detector has been set up at sea level in an area where the exposure rate is about 60 nSv h−1. A background reduction by a factor of 73 is achieved by material selection, cryostat configuration and shieldings. An analysis of the background components is given. The integrated count rate within the energy interval 50 - 3000 keV is (0.650 ± 0.001)s−1.
