The center of the medina of Algiers disappeared very soon after the capture of the city by French colonial troops in 1830. Several authors have attempted to restore the urban configuration of the Algerian souks district but they have encountered the absence of documents representing the inventory before the destruction, their proposals therefore remained hypothetical. The unexpected discovery of a relatively precise and detailed planimetric survey, which may turn out to be the oldest known plan of this nature for Algiers, offers the possibility for a new proofreading of the urban configuration of the economic center of Ottoman Algiers. And this especially since the recent archaeological excavations carried out during the works of the Algiers subway are used to confirm these new data. In addition, the use of other sources, the manuscript of Albert Devoulx, curator of the Arab Archives of the ̏ Service des Domaines d’Alger ̋ and especially the archives of urban management institutions of the Ottoman period have also made it possible to endow this reconstruction with toponyms and functions of the different spaces, in particular by locating the souks and fondouks of this central zone.
