Nadando hacia el desencanto: apreciaciones sobre la crítica al sueño americano en The Swimmer de John Cheever

    La ponencia abordará el análisis del cuento The Swimmer del autor estadounidense John Cheever, publicado por primera vez en 1964 en la revista The New Yorker. A lo largo del trabajo, indagará en los recursos que vehiculizan la crítica que el autor realiza de los ideales del "Sueño Americano", específicamente el olvido que sufre el protagonista sobre los acontecimientos de su vida. Esta suerte de amnesia que padece el personaje de Neddy Merrill pareciera funcionar como una herramienta para desentenderse del fracaso de ese "sueño americano", el cual puede encontrarse en el desenlace del relato.

    Se planteará el olvido de su vida como clave de lectura, y entendiéndolo como una operación consciente de apartamiento sobre el desencanto de las formas de vida que el “sueño americano” suscita en los nuevos barrios residenciales estadounidenses.

    Cheever construye en su cuento dos historias entrelazadas, en la narración de la primera, la travesía de Neddy, se deja entrever la segunda historia. Tal como ha visto Ricardo Piglia, respecto de la evolución del cuento, se tratará de ver claves de esa segunda historia, la escamoteada.

    This paper will adress the short story The Swimmer by John Cheever, published for the first time in 1964 in The New Yorker magazine. Along this paper, I will examine the resources that convey the criticism about the “American Dream”, specifically the oblivion the protagonist suffers in regards to the events in his life. This sort of amnesia that Neddy Merril experiences, seems to work as a resource to ignore the failure of that “american dream”, which can be found in the outcome of this short story.

    The oblivion regardings his life will pose as a key point in the interpretation, viewing it as a conscious procedure of withdrawing from the disenchantment of the ways of living from the “american dream” that takes place in the suburban neighborhoods.

    Cheever builds in his story two intertwined stories, in the narration of the first one, Neddy's journey, we are allowed a glimpse of the second one. As Ricardo Piglia presents in the topic of the evolution of the short story, I will endeavor to find the keys from that second story, the concealed one.
