En los ríos, bajo la sombra de los árboles y al cobijo del quepis: representaciones gráficas del aseo y del descanso militar durante la Intervención Francesa en México

    Resumen: En el artículo se estudian algunas de las representaciones del aseo y del descanso militar durante la Intervención Francesa en México, a partir del análisis iconográfico e icono-textual de las imágenes y reportajes que se publicaron al respecto en tres de los impresos galos con mayor circulación internacional de la época: los semanarios ilustrados “L’Illustration Journal Universel” y “Le Monde Illustré”, y el diario con caricaturas “Le Charivari”. Los dos grabados y la litografía se contrastaron con epistolarios, memorias, manuales y piezas periodísticas de autores mexicanos y franceses, con el objetivo de observar la expresión gráfica de los conceptos de higiene y privacidad que comenzaron a sedimentarse socialmente en ambos países a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Se propone que, a pesar de su protocolización, los combatientes de uno y otro bando debieron adaptarse a las duras condiciones de la guerra para poder recuperarse de ella entre los ronquidos, el calor, la zozobra que produce el acecho del enemigo y los sueños de conquista.

    Abstract: This article examines some represen- co, based on the iconographic and iconotations of military cleanliness and rest textual analysis of images and reports during the French Intervention in Mexi- published in three of the most widely circulated French prints of the time: the illustrated weeklies “L'Illustration Journal Universel” and “Le Monde Illustré”, and the satirical newspaper “Le Charivari”. The two engravings and lithograph were compared with letters, memoirs, manuals, and journalistic pieces by Mexican and French authors in order to observe the graphic expression of the concepts of hygiene and privacy that began to take root socially in both countries from the second half of the 19th century. It is proposed that, despite protocolization, combatants on both sides had to adapt to the harsh conditions of war to recover from it amidst snoring, heat, the anxiety of enemy threat, and dreams of conquest.
