Zurbarán (1600-1670) is one of the great masters of Euro-pean and American Baroque painting. However, his extensive production on religious and monastic themes has relegated his relevant contribution to the genre of military history. His works for the Salón de Reinos (Hall of Realms), other battle scenes, his series and portraits belonging to the military genre, along with his iconographic creation of the Archangel St. Michael the war-rior add up to more than fifty works that make him numerically the most important figure in the Spanish military painting of his century.
