    Este artículo explora cómo la semiótica triádica de Charles S. Peirce puede enriquecer el debate sobre las representaciones mentales en el campo de la ciencia cognitiva. Frente a teorías que las conciben como estructuras internas que corresponden a un mundo externo o las que niegan la existencia de estas, la concepción peirceana de representación o signo—basada en la relación entre representamen, objeto e interpretante—ofrece una perspectiva más amplia, generalizable y compatible con la pluralidad de enfoques teóricos y metodológicos de la disciplina. Aquí se analiza cómo las categorías de ícono, índice y símbolo ayudan a comprender cómo distintos paradigmas en las ciencias cognitivas han conceptualizado la naturaleza de la representación. Se concluye que la semiótica peirceana es un marco integrador que permite repensar el papel de las representaciones en la ciencia cognitiva contemporánea.

    This article explores how Charles S. Peirce’s triadic semiotics can enrich the debate on mental representations in the field of cognitive science. In contrast to theories that conceive them as internal structures that correspond to an external world or those that deny their existence, Peirce’s conception of representation or the sign—based on the relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant—offers a broader, generalizable perspective that is compatible with the plurality of theoretical and methodological approaches of the discipline. Here it is discussed how the categories of icon, index, and symbol help to understand how different paradigms in the cognitive sciences have conceptualized the nature of representation. It is concluded that Peircean semiotics is an integrative framework that allows us to rethink the role of representations in contemporary cognitive science.
