Finlay como promotor de la higiene escolar

    El doctor Carlos J. Finlay como Jefe del Departamento de Sanidad en Cuba, dedicó tiempo y esfuerzos a la Higiene Escolar. Reglamentó las inspecciones escolares, junto con la Comisión de Enfermedades Infecciosas por él creada, estimuló las conferencias sobre tuberculosis en las escuelas, apoyó las clases de desarrollo físico y garantizó el desayuno a los niños asistentes, luchó por la aplicación de las vacunas conocidas en la época, dirigió y coordinó las Ordenanzas Sanitarias, que pasan a ser el Primer Código Sanitario de Cuba, que entre sus muchos aspectos reglamentaba el suministro de agua, el expendio de alimentos y los requisitos higiénicos para escuelas y colegios, todo lo cual estaba al nivel de los más avanzados conocimientos de su tiempo en materia de Higiene Escolar. Por todo lo cual, no se puede hablar de Higiene Escolar en Cuba sin hacer recordación de quien fuera uno de sus promotores, Finlay.

    Dr. Carlos J. Finlay, acting as Head of the Sanitation Department of Cuba, devoted time and efforts to the school hygiene. He instructed the school surveys together with the Infectious Disease Commission created by him, encouraged the giving of lectures on tuberculosis at schools; supported the physical education classes and guaranted the breakfast for children attending the school. Finlay also strove for the administration of the vaccines known at the time; directed and arranged the Sanitary Ordinances, the first Sanitary Code of Cuba that regulated, among other things, water supply, food sale and the hygiene requirements for schools and colleges, all of which was considered to be among the most advanced knowledge at that age in terms of school hygiene. Therefore, Cuban scool hygiene can not be dealt with without making reference to one of its greatest fosterers: Dr. Finlay.
