Este estudio analiza la figura del indiano «americano» representado en el teatro español decimonónico. Se nota una evolución del tipo en muchas obras; aquí se estudiancuatro: La familia de la moda (1805), de María Rosa Gálvez de Cabrera; Tanto valescuanto tienes (1827), del duque de Rivas; El rico y el pobre (1855), de Francisco Botella; y Quiero dinero (1960), de Antonio Alcalde Valladares. El indiano llega a ser unametáfora de la relación entre el Nuevo Mundo y el Viejo en cuanto a la interpretaciónde la economía y el poder económico. Las múltiples crisis económicas del siglo tieneneco en el teatro, tanto directa como indirectamente; metido dentro de la nueva obsesión por la economía, la figura del indiano cobra nuevos matices.

This study analyzes the figure of the American «indiano» as representaed in the Spanish theater of the nineteenth century. One notes an evolution in a number of works:here we will study four plays: La familia de la moda (1805), by María Rosa Gálvez deCabrera; Tanto vales cuanto tienes (1827), by the duque de Rivas; El rico y el pobre(1855), by Francisco Botella; and Quiero dinero (1960), by Antonio Alcalde Valladares.The indiano becomes a metaphor for the relationship between the New World and theOld as far as the interpretation of the economy and economic power are concerned. Themultiple economic crises of the century are reflected in the theater, both directly andindirectly; inserted into the new obsession over the economy, the figure of the indianoreveals unforseen nuances.
