  • Traditions about the end of Sybaris are structured to show how horrible the murder of ambassadors or suppliants is. Their corpses are coextensive with Hera's body and with the territory of the city. This treatment given to the ambassadors echoes certain aspects of the Italic fetial rite and also of other Indo-European people. Pythagoreans used these rites to construct new myths about the fall of Sybaris. This paper shows how a myth was created by philosophers.
