A saúde e o Sistema Único de Saúde nos bastidores da imprensa: o que os jornalistas têm a nos dizer?

    Introduction:The Press selects, transforms, produces, and excludes information daily concerning citizens’ social agenda, thus influencing reflections and conditioning their daily life, especially in relation to health care. Objective: To understand the media releases related to health care, particularly the Health Unified System, based on analysis of the material released in the Espírito Santo’s newspapers, A Tribuna and A Gazeta, from January 2011 to December 2012, and through the journalists’ perception of these vehicles, in order to discuss how health care and SUS are represented. Methods: Two approaches were used in the study, namely, a quantitative one, in relation to the characteristics of the news published in the periodicals, and a qualitative one, through content analysis and interviews with the journalists who write about health care in the newspapers A Tribuna and A Gazeta. Results: altogether 6,103 health care news items were found in the newspaper A Tribuna, where 1,030 of them were on Health Unified System. In A Gazeta, there were 4,663 news reports on health care, 562 of which were about the Health Unified System. According to journalists, the news production is embedded in a journalistic culture that values the extraordinary and current events in which the health care agenda usually fits, when there are epidemics and negative events. Conclusion: it was evident that the release of health care news follows the newsworthiness criteria of journalism, not quite questioned by journalists, and that certain topics tend to be neglected because they do not fit in these criteria, and that the news that spread most about the Health Unified System tend to show only their problems.

    Introdução: A imprensa seleciona, transforma, produz e exclui informações diariamente da agenda social dos cidadãos e pode, assim, influenciar reflexões e condicionar aspectos do cotidiano, principalmente em relação à saúde. Objetivo: Objetivou-se compreender a divulgação midiática de saúde e particularmente do Sistema Único de Saúde a partir de uma análise das matérias veiculadas pelos periódicos capixabas A Tribuna e A Gazeta, no período de janeiro de 2011 a dezembro de 2012, e por meio da análise da percepção dos jornalistas desses veículos, a fim de discutir como a saúde e o SUS são representados. Métodos: Foi utilizada uma abordagem quantitativa em relação às características das notícias publicadas nos periódicos e uma qualitativa, por meio da análise de conteúdo, mediante entrevistas realizadas com os jornalistas que escrevem sobre saúde nesses jornais. Resultados: Ao todo, 6.103 notícias sobre saúde foram encontradas no periódico A Tribuna, sendo 1.030 delas sobre o tema SUS. Em A Gazeta, foram 4.663 notícias referentes à saúde, sendo 562 sobre o SUS. De acordo com os jornalistas, a produção noticiosa está inserida numa cultura jornalística que valoriza os acontecimentos extraordinários e atuais, na qual a pauta de saúde usualmente se enquadra quando há epidemias e eventos negativos. Conclusão: Foi evidenciado que a divulgação das matérias sobre saúde obedece aos critérios de noticiabilidade do jornalismo, pouco questionados pelos jornalistas. Destaca-se, ainda, que certas temáticas tendem a ser negligenciadas por não se enquadrarem nesses critérios e, também, que as matérias as quais mais difundem episódios relacionados ao SUS tendem a dar visibilidade apenas a suas mazelas.
