    Introduction: Buriti palm fruit extends throughout the Amazon and its economic exploitation is commonly known by the local population. Objective: This study aimed at developing and testing an alternative low cost toothbrush made with buriti fiber (Mauritia flexuosa). Methods: Thirty dentistry students from the State University of Amazonas (UEA) of both genders, aged 18 years old. Exclusion criteria were use of braces or dental prosthesis. The volunteers were instructed on the Bass brushing technique. After seven days of monitored brushing with Colgate® toothbrush brand, the volunteers brushed their teeth with the alternative toothbrush following the same methodology. The quality of brushing was indicated by PHP-Modified (Patient Hygiene Performance) index. The means of biofilm removal rates before and after cleaning with both toothbrushes was analyzed. Results: There was no significant difference between traditional and alternative toothbrush PHP index by t (Student) test for paired samples (p-value>0.05), thus proving the efficiency of the alternative toothbrush. Conclusion: The toothbrush made with Buriti fiber is an effective and cheaper alternative to oral hygiene, and could be readily available for Amazon people.

    Introdução: A distribuição geográfica do buriti se estende por toda a Amazônia, e seu aproveitamento econômico é comumente sabido pela população local. Objetivo: Desenvolver e testar um dispositivo alternativo – a escova dental convencional – de baixo custo, feita com fibras de buriti (Mauritia flexuosa).Métodos: Foram selecionados 30 acadêmicos de odontologia da Universidade do Estado do Amazonas (UEA), de ambos os gêneros, maiores de 18 anos, sem uso de aparelho ortodôntico e/ou prótese dentária. Os voluntários receberam instruções sobre a técnica de escovação de Bass. Inicialmente os voluntários fizeram escovação monitorada com escova tradicional da marca Colgate® e após sete dias realizaram a escovação com a escova alternativa, seguindo a mesma metodologia. A qualidade de escovação foi indicada pelo índice PHP-Modificado (Patient Hygiene Performance). Foram comparadas as médias dos índices de remoção do biofilme antes e após a higienização com ambas as escovas. Resultados: Não houve diferença significativa entre os índices PHP das escovas tradicional e alternativa, pelo teste t (Student) para amostras pareadas (p-value>0.05), comprovando assim a eficiência da escova de fibra de buriti. Conclusão: A escova de buriti apresentou-se como um instrumento opcional para realizar a higiene bucal, é eficaz e econômico e pode atender às necessidades das populações amazônicas.
