    There is a gap of 13 years between the demonstration of effectiveness of some treatments and its utilization by clinicians. The reasons are from the difficulty to obtain information and from the deterioration of the knowledge by the time. However, there are methods that facilitate the access to the information brought up to date and it take of decision in the clinic or in the service manager, like the systematic reviews1. For it supply to absence of literature in portuguese about the tema in dentistry journals and must to the existence of misconceptions about this method of synthesis from the best scientific evidence, succinctly, we present concepts, methods and application of the systematic reviews for clinicians, students, managers and public police makers for best understand and improved use utilization of this instrument of organization of the knowledge.

    Há uma defasagem de treze anos entre a demonstração de efetividade de alguns tratamentos e sua utilização por médicos clínicos, decorrente da dificuldade para acessar informação e da deterioração do conhecimento pelo tempo. Porém, há métodos que facilitam o acesso à informação atualizada e a tomada de decisão na clínica ou na administração de serviços, tais como as revisões sistemáticas. Para suprir a ausência de literatura em português sobre o tema em revistas odontológicas e devido à existência de equívocos sobre este método de síntese da melhor evidência científica, sucintamente, apresentam-se conceitos, métodos e aplicação das revisões sistemáticas para clínicos, estudantes, gestores e responsáveis por políticas públicas para melhor compreenderem e utilizarem esse instrumento de organização do conhecimento.
