El cambio editorial en La Cuarta y la invisibilización de la violencia de género: análisis de la representación de las mujeres entre 2016 y 2018

El 16 de noviembre de 2017 el diario La Cuarta, uno de los más vendidos a nivel nacional y conocido por las audiencias chilenas como “El diario popular”, anunció una transformación editorial; un cambio en el tratamiento que históricamente había otorgado al género femenino: desde ese momento apoyarían la reivindicación de la mujer y se sumarían a la lucha por la igualdad.
Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar tres periodos en los que se revisaron las noticias sobre violencia de género hacia la mujer publicadas en el medio. Los periodos estudiados fueron: del 16 de mayo al 16 de noviembre de 2016, del 16 de mayo al 16 de noviembre de 2017, y del 17 de noviembre de 2017 al 17 de mayo de 2018. Se abarcó un año y medio de publicaciones para incluir todos los textos periodísticos relacionados con la violencia de género. El propósito fue dilucidar si existió un cambio real en el enfoque de estas noticias, pasando desde el sensacionalismo y la revictimización hacia el tratamiento digno.
La conclusión principal es que, en lugar de mejorar su tratamiento de la violencia de género, La Cuarta optó por dejar de cubrir el tema. Esto significa que el diario más leído del país dejó de abordar estas temáticas invisibilizando un problema que anualmente afecta a miles de mujeres en Chile y en el mundo.

On November 16, 2017, the newspaper La Cuarta, one of the best-selling nationally and known by Chilean audiences as “The popular newspaper”, announced an editorial transformation; a change in the treatment it had historically given to the female gender: from that moment on they would support the vindication of women and join the fight for equality.
The goal of this research was to analyze three periods in which the news on gender violence against women published in the media were reviewed. The periods studied were: from May 16 to November 16, 2016, from May 16 to November 16, 2017, and from November 17, 2017 to May 17, 2018. A year and a half of publications were covered to include all journalistic texts related to gender violence. The purpose was to elucidate whether there was a real change in the approach to these news stories, moving from sensationalism and revictimization towards dignified treatment.
The main conclusion is that, instead of improving its treatment of gender violence, La Cuarta opted to stop covering the topic. This means that the most widely read newspaper in the country stopped addressing these issues, making invisible a problem that annually affects thousands of women in Chile and in the world
