  • Resumen
    • Ângela de Azevedo's Dicha y desdicha del juego y devoción de la Virgen has drawn scholarly attention for its exploration of women's agency, particularly regarding marriage. This article argues for a renewed consideration of the play's religious themes and their interaction with agency by introducing particular attention to the theological controversy de auxiliis. The salvatory role of the Virgin Mary within the comedia dialogues with the de auxiliis controversy, which concerns the extent of humanity's free will in matters of salvation. By introducing religious debates contemporary to Azevedo's writing in our consideration of the play, we can further develop our understanding of the role of free will in Azevedo's work, building connections between this feminist scholarship and the theological debates Azevedo's play engages. Such an approach sheds new light on the role of Marian devotion and metatextuality within the play.
