    El presente artículo analiza los retos que enfrenta la sociedad civil en la formación de la democracia mexicana, tomando como punto de partida las descalificaciones que el gobierno federal de la Cuarta Transformación realizó a la sociedad civil al inicio del sexenio. Se retoman debates de la teoría social contemporánea que permiten comprender la dimensión polifacética de la sociedad civil y los desafíos que enfrenta su definición. Esto también se aborda a la luz de las principales etapas de formación de sociedad civil en México desde mediados del siglo XX hasta la actualidad. El artículo cuestiona ¿De qué hablamos cuando se trata de sociedad civil? ¿Cuál es la relación entre la sociedad civil y los regímenes de gobierno democráticos? y ¿Qué tan posible es una Cuarta Transformación sin sociedad civil?

    This article analyzes the civil society challenges in the formation of Mexican democracy, starting from the disqualifications that the federal government of the Fourth Transformation did to civil society at the beginning of the sexennium. Debates of contemporary social theory are taken up to understand the multifaceted dimension of civil society and the challenges its definition faces. This is also addressed in light of the main stages of civil society formation in Mexico since the middle of the 20th century to the present. The article asks: What are we talking about when it comes to civil society? What is the relationship between civil society and democratic government regimes? and How possible is a Fourth Transformation without civil society?
