      Imbuido de un romanticismo manifiesto e inserto en el ambiente de la contracultura de los años sesenta, el New American Cinema sostuvo una concepción expansiva y mística de la mirada, que sustrajo al cine su poder directo de referencialidad, es decir, de su capacidad para presentar naturalmente el tiempo, el espacio, las personas, las cosas. En algunas cintas de Brakhage, Warhol o Frampton, entre otros, se produce un paso de lo psicodélico a lo fantástico que da como resultado obras no solo estéticamente impactantes sino que ambicionan actuar socialmente en la experiencia. El presente artículo aborda esta relación entre lo fantástico, lo psicodélico y el cine underground norteamericano, vínculo que, aunque orillado por la crítica, es fundamental para comprender su estética y su potencial político.

    Steeped in a manifest romanticism and embedded in the counterculture of the 1960s, New American Cinema upheld an expansive and mystical conception of the gaze, which deprived cinema of its direct referential quality, that is, of its capacity to present time, space, people and things naturally. In some films by Brakhage, Warhol and Frampton, among others, there is a passage from the psychedelic to the fantastic that results in works that are not only aesthetically arresting but also aim to act socially in the experience. The present article addresses this relationship between the fantastic, the psychedelic and American underground cinema, a bond that, although neglected by critics, is fundamental for understanding its aesthetics and its political potential.
