    A true classic in the historiography of Late Antiquity, the “Pirenne thesis”, named after the Belgian medievalist Henri Pirenne (1862-1935), is still being debated a century after it was first formulated. The first aim of this article is to show that it is by bringing the Mediterranean into the debate as a heuristic concept that the work of the Belgian scholar takes on its full meaning. Secondly, it offers an overview and some perspectives on research on the period in the field of Mediterranean harbour archaeology

    Véritable classique de l’historiographie sur la fin de l’Antiquité, la « thèse Pirenne », du nom du médiéviste belge Henri Pirenne (1862-1935), demeure débattue un siècle après sa formulation initiale. Cet article a pour premier objectif de démontrer que c’est en associant au débat la Méditerranée en tant que concept heuristique que le travail de l’historien belge prend toute sa signification. Dans un deuxième temps, sont proposés un panorama et quelques perspectives de la recherche sur la période en archéologie portuaire méditerranéenne
