    En los albores de la Restauración del régimen borbónico (1875), representantes conspicuos del conservadurismo político catalán y del gobierno dirigido por Antonio Cánovas del Castillo participaron en una gran operación de soborno de los jefes carlistas del distrito militar del Centro. En el artículo se analizan los pormenores de esas negociaciones, la mácula en origen del nuevo gobierno, así como los límites legales y morales que pudieron legitimar la corrupción, salvando el honor del ejército y del “rey soldado”, en aras del interés general de la nación. El resultado de la operación, que contó con la tácita aprobación real, movió todo un cuerpo de ejército hacia el Pirineo, y contribuyó a su vez a erosionar todavía más el ya de por sí debilitado carlismo catalán.

    At the dawn of the Restoration of the Bourbon regime (1875), prominent representatives of Catalan political conservatism and the government led by Antonio Cánovas del Castillo participated in a large-scale bribery operation of the Carlist leaders of the military district of the Centre. The article analyses the details of these negotiations, the taint of the new government at its origin, as well as the legal and moral limits that could legitimise corruption, saving the honour of the army and the “soldier king”, in the interests of the general nation. The result of the operation, which had tacit royal approval, moved an entire army corps towards the Pyrenees, and in turn contributed to further eroding the already weakened Catalan Carlism.
