Los imaginarios urbanos son esquemas cognitivos que permiten orientarse en el entramado físico y simbólico de la ciudad y determinan cómo las personas producen el espacio, construyendo también su subjetividad. Mediante ellos, ciudadanos y técnicos elaboran cartografías mentales que simplifican la realidad urbana e invisibilizan importantes elementos de ella. En las visones normalizadas, la ciudad informal queda eclipsada, asignándosele un estatuto de no-ciudad que la excluye de las intervenciones de la administración y despoja a sus habitantes de la categoría de ciudadanos. A través de imaginarios de estigmatización, la ciudad informal se construye como negativo de la ciudad formal, negando a sus moradores el derecho a la ciudad. Pese a ello, imaginarios alternativos han puesto de manifiesto la complejidad y riqueza de la ciudad informal, su capacidad de generar redes y lógicas propias y de dar respuesta a los retos de la vulnerabilidad social. También se han realizado intervenciones que han atraído la mirada hacia la ciudad informal, sacándola de su invisibilización y ligándola a la ciudad formal, cambiando la forma en que eran concebidos estos espacios y el fenómeno urbano en su totalidad. Urban imaginaries are cognitive schemes that allow people to orient themselves in the physical and symbolic framework of the city and determine how people produce space, also constructing their subjectivity. Through them, citizens and technicians elaborate mental cartographies that simplify urban reality and make important elements of it invisible. In the normalized visions, the informal city is made invisible, being assigned a status of non-city that excludes it from the interventions of the administration and deprives its inhabitants of the category of citizens. Through stigmatizing imaginaries, the informal city is constructed as a negative of the formal city, denying its inhabitants the right to the city. Despite this, alternative imaginaries have highlighted the complexity and richness of the informal city, its capacity to generate its own networks and logics and to respond to the challenges of social vulnerability. There have also been interventions that have drawn attention to the informal city, bringing it out of its invisibility and linking it to the formal city, changing the way in which these spaces and the urban phenomenon as a whole were conceived. However, visibility also has an invisible face.
