    Durante el siglo XIX la piratería en los mares del sur de Filipinas ocupó cada vez más esfuerzos del gobierno de Manila, que deseaba evitar los conflictos internacionales y frenar los daños de esta práctica. Para ello se ensayaron métodos que no se limitaron a la violencia, sino que añadieron prácticas que pudieran asegurar el futuro control del territorio y su integración en la economía colonial. En esto Zamboanga jugó un papel fundamental como puerto militar, zona comercial privilegiada y primer punto de contacto diplomático con los sultanatos filipinos durante el siglo XIX.

    During the 19th century, piracy in the southern Philippine seas increasingly occupied the efforts of the Manila government, which wished to avoid international conflicts and the damage caused by this practice. To this end, methods were tested that were not limited to violence, but also included practices that could ensure future control of the territory and its integration into the colonial economy. In this regard, Zamboanga played a fundamental role as a military port, a privileged commercial zone, and the first point of diplomatic contact with the Philippine sultanates during the 19th century.
