Quito, Ecuador
The article presents the process of critical-interpretative reading of urban contexts implemented in the Urban Planning workshop of the Master’s program at the Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Arts at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, Quito campus. The methodology is based on the concept of the palimpsest, as explained by André Corboz (1983) in “The Territory as a Palimpsest.” This concept is applied to the urban dimension, considering the city as a text that is rewritten multiple times on the same substrate. The superimposition of layers accumulated over time initially complicates the understanding of a city, where its elements intermingle, some are hidden, and others are lost. Therefore, understanding urban space as a dynamic relationship is crucial for comprehending the environment and its changes, allowing for a new interpretation. The reference scenario is the city of Quito, which, as a protagonist of rapid urban growth since the beginning of the 20th century, has lost its connection with the geographical memory of its territory. The reading methodology developed focuses on rescuing traces and footprints that have been concealed over time and are now fundamental for the future development of the city.
