    La opción preferencial por los pobres es la contribución más importante, en nuestro tiempo, de la vida y la reflexión de los cristianos de América Latina a la conciencia eclesial universal. Intentaré presentar el tema en tres partes. La primera será una rápida visión histórica de eso que hoy se llama opción preferencial por los pobres. En la segunda parte trataré de precisar el sentido de esa expresión. La tercera parte, más corta, la dedicaré a lo que en tiempos más recientes se ha empezado a llamar la nueva evangelización.

    The preferential option for the poor is the most important contribution, in our time, of the life and reflection of the Christians of Latin America to the universal ecclesial conscience. I will try to present the topic in three parts. The first will be a quick historical overview of what today is called the preferential option for the poor. In the second part I will try to specify the meaning of that expression. The third part, shorter, I will dedicate to what in more recent times has begun to be called the new evangelization.
