The biology of the large-scaled gurnard Lepidotrigla cavillone (Teleostei: Triglidae) was studied for the first time in the Balearic Islands. Samples were obtained from scientific surveys as well as from the commercial bottom trawl fleet during one year. Length at first maturity was estimated by fitting a logistic curve and growth parameters were calculated by fitting the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF), based on otolith readings. Sampled individuals ranged from 1 to 4 years, reaching sexual maturity during the first year (8.9 and 8.5 cm for males and females, respectively). The seasonal variability of Le Cren’s condition index (Kn) and the hepatosomatic (HIS) and digestivosomatic (DSI) indices were determined for both sexes. The monthly variability of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and its relationship with Kn, HSI and DSI suggests that the species has a mixed income-capital breeder strategy and a long spawning season (April–August). Batch fecundity was estimated using the gravimetric method, with annual realized fecundity being from 16000 to 47000 oocytes per female. Diet was studied by stomach content analysis showing it is based mainly on crustaceans. The distribution of abundance was modelled based on survey data using generalized additive models, showing the highest abundances in the north of the Menorca Channel and west off Mallorca Island.
