    Las asociaciones mutuales creadas por los inmigrantes en Argentina han sido estudiadas con diversos enfoques. El objetivo de este artículo es el de analizar la sustentabilidad financiera de tales entidades, el origen de sus recursos, la distribución de sus fondos sociales y el costo de sus servicios asistenciales, aspectos hasta ahora poco investigados. En primer lugar, se incluye una revisión de la historiografía argentina referida al mutualismo étnico, en particular de aquellos estudios que se han interesado por sus funciones sanitarias de las mutuales. A continuación, presentaremos una serie de estimaciones propias sobre el funcionamiento del sistema, basadas en los datos provistos por los censos y por informes referidos al mutualismo que fueron elaborados en la etapa en que este alcanzaba su mayor desarrollo. En una última parte veremos en detalle la forma en que obtenían sus recursos y distribuían sus prestaciones dos de las mutuales étnicas más importantes de la ciudad de Buenos Aires: la Asociación Española de Socorros Mutuos y la Asociación Catalana Montepío de Montserrat.

    Different research approaches have been adopted towards the mutual associations created by immigrants in Argentina. This article aims to analyse the financial sustainability of such entities, the origin of their resources, the distribution of their social funds and the cost of their support services, aspects into which little research has so far been done. The article begins with a review of Argentine historiography in the context of ethnic mutualism, looking in particular at studies that have considered the healthcare role of mutual societies. This is followed by a series of our own evaluations on the functioning of the system, based on the data provided by the censuses and by reports referring to mutualism that were prepared during the period in which it reached its apex. The final part of the article takes a detailed look at the way in which two of the most important ethnic mutual societies in the city of Buenos Aires obtained their resources and distributed their benefits: the Spanish Mutual Aid Association and the Catalan Association Montepío de Montserrat.
