    Este trabajo tiene un doble propósito. Por un lado, dar cuenta de la diversidad lingüística en México, los desafíos para determinar cuántas lenguas se hablan en el país y la propuesta institucional del gobierno mexicano a esta realidad. Por otro lado, destacar la importancia de la documentación y descripción lingüística ante un escenario de lenguas en riesgo, con énfasis en las lenguas zapotecas del tronco otomangue. Los estudios en lenguas zapotecas han abordado varios temas de la fonología, morfología, sintaxis y lexicografía, con un importante trabajo de documentación lingüística.

    The goal of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it accounts for the linguistic diversity in Mexico, for the challenges in determining how many languages are spoken in the territory and the institutional proposals from the Mexican government vis-à-vis the actual facts. On the other hand, it highlights the importance of linguistic documentation and linguistic description in the context of endangered languages, with special emphasis on the Zapotec languages of the Oto-Manguean stock. Studies on Zapotec languages have focused on various topics in phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicography, on the basis of robust linguistic documentation
