Victim of a cerebral haeomorrhage, Alain Brieux died unexpectedly on 13 October 1985 at his home in the Val St. Germain. Poet, bookseller and arabist, Brieux was one of the most unusual, although also one of the most committed, denizens of the world of the history of science and his death is a savage blow to those who still hold to the idea of the unity of knowledge and of the essencial humanism of science.
