The copious poetic career of Ida Vitale, that transcends seven decades, has redounded to an extensive exercise of revision, reedition, and refinement of her own work. This exercise has not only been manifested by the author on her own but also observed in metaliterary poems and interviews. Nevertheless, it had not been established enough through a comparative analysis. On this matter, Time without keys (2021) has become an insightful work through which the process of poetic creation associated with the revision of her poems can be confirmed and analysed. In this article we go deep into the process of revision, correction and rewriting in the work of the Uruguayan writer Ida Vitale (1923). Through the comparative analysis of decisive texts for this matter, from her last book of poems, Time without keys, published in 2021. We will take as a basis the studies about the intertextuality in the poetic work of Ida Vitale and the concept of “palimpsest” that the author employs on her own work to demonstrate that this process has a wider significance that the one studied before. This will affect not only the dialogue with other texts and authors but also the dialogue among her own texts. In this sense, we will account for how the intertextuality continues to configure her own work in this latter published poetry, providing coherence to her poetic career, and bringing to light the intertextual relations that ca be found in Time without keys. To elucidate the process of revision, reedition and refinement of Vitale’s poetic work we propose, firstly, a differentiation between the insertion of minor and mostly formal changes, that aim to find improvements in the poem’s rhythm and syntax; and secondly, the concept of “rewriting”, understood as the introduction of changes that alter the poems’ meaning and content. Therefor, through the comparative analysis of her poems we can behold the pertinence of the term “rewriting”, that we propose in this article to account for the process of poetic creation associated to the review procedure not only of her poems but also of the literary tradition, backbone of her poetic career. The lack of global studies about this matter and its interest to get to know Vitale’s work justify our contribution.
