    El hallazgo de un inédito y abundante cúmulo de documentos pertenecientes a un bergantín-goleta corsario rioplatense nos ofrece lo que, bien se podría definir como «El Tesoro del San Francisco Xavier».

    En efecto, aquellos escritos fechados en 1801 pertenecieron al que fuera el primer buque escuela de la Academia de Náutica de Buenos Aires, y protagonista del bautismo de fuego de los marinos mercantes hispano-argentinos. Este tesoro documental permitirá comprobar, no solo características singulares de la profesión marítima de la época, sino un dato hasta ahora completamente desconocido: el poder de compra y el valor comparativo de la que fue la primera divisa global, el «Real de a 8» español.

    Conocido dentro de los dominios de la monarquía hispánica indistintamente por su nombre o como «Peso Fuerte» y, fuera de ella, como «Spanish Dollar» o «Piece of Eight», fue durante más de tres siglos el mascarón de proa del Imperio Español alrededor del mundo y la fuente de financiamiento de su influencia cultural, científica, política, militar y económica cuya trascendencia llega hasta el presente.

    The discovery of an unpublished and abundant collection of documents belonging to a privateer brig-schooner from the River Plate region offers what we could well define as «The Treasure of the San Francisco Xavier».

    Indeed, those writings dated in 1801 that belonged to the first training ship of the Nautical Academy of Buenos Aires, protagonist of the baptism of fire of the Spanish-Argentine merchant seamen, will allow us to verify not only singular characteristics of the maritime profession of the time, but also a fact that was completely unknown until now: the purchasing power and comparative value of what was the first global currency, the Spanish «Real de a 8».

    Known within the domains of the Spanish monarchy indistinctly by its name or as the «Peso Fuerte» and, outside of it, as the «Spanish Dollar» or the «Piece of Eight», it was for more than three centuries the figurehead of the Spanish Empire around the world and the source of financing for its cultural, scientific, political, military and economic influence, whose significance reaches to the present.
