Resumen de Cómo mejorar el Brexit: un reto geopolítico pendiente para la Unión Europea

Desde el Brexit se han ido produciendo una serie de cambios en la situación geopolítica y en el gobierno británico que hacen necesario y posible mejorar los acuerdos existentes. Para ello, un prerrequisito consiste en cumplir plenamente lo firmado respecto a la frontera de Irlanda del Norte, la pesca y los derechos de los ciudadanos. La agenda negociadora incluye, entre otros asuntos, la firma de un acuerdo sanitario y fitosanitario, la renovación del acuerdo pesquero, la firma de un acuerdo de movilidad juvenil, ligar los sistemas de derechos de emisión de carbono y una mayor coordinación regulatoria. Existe también la necesidad de mejorar las relaciones en aquellas políticas hasta ahora dejadas al margen y que cobran especial importancia en el contexto geopolítico actual, como la defensa, la seguridad y la política exterior. La UE-27 y el Reino Unido comparten intereses, problemas y valores. Ha llegado el momento de dejar atrás los resquemores del Brexit y mirar hacia delante.

Since Brexit, changes in the geopolitical landscape and the British government have made it both necessary and feasible to improve existing agreements. A prerequisite for this process is the full implementation of previous commitments related to the Northern Ireland border, fisheries, and citizens’ rights. The agenda includes, among other issues, the signing of a Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS), the renewal of the fisheries agreement, the establishment of a youth mobility scheme, the alignment of the carbon emissions trading systems and enhanced regulatory coordination. Additionally, there is an opportunity to strengthen cooperation in policy areas previously overlooked but now of growing geopolitical relevance, such as defence, security and foreign policy. The EU-27 and the United Kingdom share common interests, challenges and values. It is time to move beyond the divisions of Brexit and look towards the future.
