Argentina
We present Mio-Pliocene fossil remains of chelid turtles from the Ituzaingó Formation, Argentina. Material includes peripheral, pleural and neural bone plates and small plastron fragments referred to the Phrynops geoffroanus complex. Fossils were collected in the basal section of the Ituzaingó Formation, in association with variety of a marine invertebrate and "Mesopotamian" mammal aggregate (Late Miocene-Pliocene). The fossils studied were referred to the extant genus Phrynops, similar to members of the supraspecific complex Phrynops geoffroanus. We discuss the significance of this turtle fauna as paleoenvironmental indicator.
