  • Resumen
    • Parana Formation (Middle Miocene-Lower Pliocene, maximum thickness about 200-250 m.) represents the youngest tertiary marine transgression-regression record of the argentine Chacoparana Basin. At western parts of the Province of Chaco, Paraná Formation is absent. It would be laterally replaced by continental accumulations added without differentiation to the uppermost sections of Chaco Formation. This latter unit is a continental alluvial record normally lying between maastrichtian-paleocene shallow marine and littoral deposits of Mariano Boedo Formation, and similar mio-pliocene sedimentites of Paraná Formation. At the major part of the Province of Entre Ríos, structural contours of the top of the basaltic succession of Serra Geral Formation (Neojurassic-Eocretaceous) clearly differentiate the Asuncion and Rio de la Plata Highs, and the "Eastern plateu". These three tectonic features would have controlled the mesopotamian distribution of Paraná Formation and its proximal facies.
