  • Resumen
    • A review of the present knowledge concerning the Camacho Formation (Middle? to Upper Miocene?, Uruguay) is presented. Rocks of this unit actually are found in four areas of Uruguay. The Camacho Formation was deposited during the the Paranense (or Entrerriense) Marine Transgression. The tectonic setting is analyzed as well as the lithostratigraphy of Camacho Formation with special reference to uppermost boundary (Kiyu Lithofacies). The rich fossil content of the Formation is listed, being represented by taxa of Ostracoda, Bacillariophyta, Foraminiferida, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Echinoidea, Brachiopoda, Crustacea, Bryozoa, invertebrate trace fossils, Selachii, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia. Deposition occurred during marginal marine and shallow marine conditions reconstructed using sedimentologic and paleoecologic criteria. Two paleogeographic littoral provinces of warm and warm-temperate waters were recognized. Different criteria indicate that the Camacho Formation originated during one or several high sea-level stands between Zones N7 and N16 of Serravallian to Tortonian age.
