Resumen de Afloraments urbans de la ciutat de Palma (Mallorca, Illes Balears)

  Els materials de construcció extrets de la roca i utilitzats a les ciutats al llarg del temps amaguen elements característics dels ambients sedimentaris que els formaren. Es tracta de fòssils i/o estructures sedimentàries principalment, que es poden observar a pedres ornamentals i lloses que una vegada s’han extret de les pedreres són col·locades a les construccions de la ciutat quedant exposades a parets i paviments. Per altra banda, cal destacar el potencial didàctic d’aquests elements de l’espai urbà com una eina de divulgació científica per a entendre els paisatges producte de l’activitat humana i la seva relació amb els recursos naturals que els envolten. El present treball reuneix una llista d’alguns dels afloraments urbans localitzats a la ciutat de Palma i a més a més, s’hi identifiquen els fòssils i les estructures sedimentàries més característiques. En aquest sentit, Palma presenta un abundant patrimoni cultural i urbà construït sobretot amb calcàries i calcarenites del Miocè superior i Pleistocè que mostren trets geològics heretats de la seva formació. Dins aquests materials és fàcil identificar fòssils marins com bivalves, gasteròpodes i mol·luscs. També és molt habitual trobar restes d’estructures sedimentàries com laminacions encreuades, ripple marks, rizoconcrecions i icnofòssils.

  Construction materials extracted from the rock and used in cities over time, hide characteristic features of the sedimentary environments which formed these materials. These are mainly fossils and/or sedimentary structures that can be observed in ornamental stones and slabs and once they are extracted from quarries and placed in the city constructions remain exposed in walls and pavements. On the other hand, it is remarkable the didactic potential of these elements of the urban space as a tool for science dissemination to understand the landscapes product of the human activity and its relation with the surrounding natural resources. The present study gathers a list of some urban outcrops located in the city of Palma, identifying fossils and also the most characteristic sedimentary structures. In this sense, Palma has an abundant cultural and urban heritage built mainly with Upper Miocene and Pleistocene limestones and calcarenites that show outstanding geological features inherited from its formation. Within these materials it is easy to identify marine fossils such as bivalves, gastropods and mollusks. It is also very common to find remains of sedimentary structures such as cross-laminations, ripple marks, rhizoconcretions and ichnofossils.
