    Constatando l’importanza della liturgia nella formazione del pensiero e della spiritualità di Francesco d’Assisi si fa il confronto di alcuni suoi scritti con i testi contenuti nel breviario da lui usato. Questo permette di riconoscere come la Bibbia e soprattutto il Vangelo fu conosciuto dall’Assisiate non in modo immediato ma, con tutto ciò che comporta, in modo mediato dalla liturgia. Tale constatazione fa cogliere che la propria dimensione ecclesiale non è unicamente una sottomissione estrinseca all’autorità ma un aspetto sostanziale che caratterizza anche la sua predicazione evangelica.

    Recognizing the importance of the liturgy in shaping the thought and spirituality of Francis of Assisi, a comparison is made between some of his writings and the texts contained in the breviary he used. This allows us to see that the Bible, and especially the Gospel, was known to the Saint of Assisi not unmediated, but rather through the mediation of the liturgy, with all that this entails. This realization reveals that, for Francis, the ecclesial dimension, i.e. his being «of the Church,» was not a mere matter of outward submission to authority, but an essential aspect of his preaching of the Gospel.
