During archaeological excavations in the area of the future road B87n, a settlement area was documented near Tultewitz, Burgenlandkreis district, close to the Saale River. It has been used since the Early Neolithic period. In an apparently two-phase settlement pit (Feature 902), ceramics and stone artefacts were found alongside burnt clay and animal bones, including a flint dagger and half an Early Neolithic mace.
Of particular importance are the first fragments in Central Germany of a stone mould for a blank of a flanged axe and another stone mould fragment possibly for a blank of a dagger or halberd blade. Based on the pottery, the contents of the pit can be dated primarily to the late Early Bronze Age (1775–1625 BC) but partially also to the Early Neolithic Linear Pottery Culture.
