    En este artículo se examina el papel de la educación superior y su interrelación con el crecimiento económico y social del país, con énfasis en la incertidumbre provocada por los acelerados cambios —a nivel nacional e internacional— en los ámbitos eco-nómico, político social y ambiental. Se analiza la importancia de la formación de ciu-dadanos democráticos y la necesidad de repensar las funciones y estrategias de la edu-cación superior en la sociedad del conocimiento y la información. Se reflexiona si las instituciones de educación superior mexicanas están proporcionando una educación pertinente y de calidad, y se resalta la importancia de construir un nuevo pacto social educativo para el futuro de la educación en México, abordando desafíos significativos para lograr un desarrollo sostenible, equitativo y democrático.

    This article examines the role of higher education and how it is related to the economicand social growth of the country, with an emphasis on the uncertainty caused by accel-erated changes —at the national and at international levels— in the economic, politi-cal, social and environmental spheres. The importance of the formation of democratic citizens, and the need to rethink the functions and strategies of higher education in the knowledge and information society, are analyzed. The article reflects on whether Mexican higher education institutions are providing relevant and quality education and highlighting the importance of building a new social pact on education for the future of education in Mexico, addressing significant challenges to achieve sustainable, equitable and democratic development.
