  El propósito de este artículo es proveer un punto de vista general del rol de la terapia periodontal en el tratamiento de las periodontitis. Confirmar la posición de este artículo que el manejo del paciente no garantiza un desenlace exitoso, pues las enfermedades periodontales usualmente involucran numerosas y complejas causas y síntomas. Finalmente decir que el diagnóstico, tratamiento y manejo de la enfermedad, así como la terapia preventiva posterior debe ser hecha por el Clínico tratante basado en las circunstancias específicas que se presentan en el paciente.

  The Purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of the role of supportive periodontal therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease. Reliance on this position paper in patient management will not guarantee a successfull outcome, as periodontal diseases typically involve numerous and complex causas and symptoms. Utilimately, decisions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease, as well as subsequent preventive therapy, must be made by the treating practitioner based on the specific circumstances presented by that patient.
