The ideas of race and racial mixture have forged a complex history in Latin America from the time of the European invasion up until the nationalist and national projects of yesteryear and today. In the context of current efforts to re-found the State, the nation, and national projects in the Andean region, the author explores the ruptures and continuities present in the contemporary ties among race, mestizaje, and power in the long colonial horizon. Walsh begins by relating the idea of race and the practices of racialization that afforded support to mestizaje as a national project in the 19th and 20th centuries. Such discussion serves as a base for the analysis that follows focused on the debates initiated with Ecuador´s Constituent Assembly (2007-2008) and now taking form in the constitution and its application.
