This study reviews some critical approaches to the literature/photography relationship in Émile Zola to propose, unlike them, a non-convergent link. The proposal is that the writer's photographic practice takes place after the end of the great Rougon-Macquart cycle, due to the exhaustion of the naturalist poetics, largely due to the irreducible tension between the scientific program and the literary realization. Naturalist poetics constituted a mode of approach and representation of reality that prevented photography from being part of it and which photography itself, as a technical image, radically alters precisely because of its automatic and physical-chemical capture of the world. Zola deliberately dissociates photography from (naturalist) literature and (impressionist) painting to find its aesthetic specificity precisely based on its technical singularity. Photography thus offers itself as a way of inquiring into reality and its possibilities of representation to which literature has no access. In Zolian inquiry with the device, that is, in his photographs, a path can be traced that goes from the indexical-analogical record of the world, properly realist, to expressive experimentation, by means of non-anthropomorphic framing, of rather «aberrant» visions, that orient his photographs in the direction of the avant-garde.
