This paper begins by highlighting the geodiversity of Catalonia. It then goes on todiscuss the extractive activities carried out on the geological resources here, as anexample of an ecosystem provisioning service, and it also looks at the cultural servicesprovided by the mineral kingdom, emphasising the value of the geological heritage, which is reflected at present by such instruments as the Inventory of Areas ofGeological Interest of Catalonia and by UNESCO’s accreditation of the Geological andMining Park of Central Catalonia and of the Tremp Basin-Montsec Geopark. Someactions are also proposed, including the need to develop a master plan for the use ofgeological resources with a view to ensuring their sustainable management, the need toupdate the regulations on the restoration of areas affected by extractive activities, andthe need to foster the dissemination of geological values and knowledge in society as awhole.
