A fragmentary relief in white marble, preserved in a private collection, represents with great subtlety the episodes of the dispute of Saint Catherine, her condemnation and martyrdom, bordered by an unmistakable pattern of heraldry. Probably created in the third quarter of the thirteenth century in Castile, it proves the early creation of commemorative and devotional screens, linked to altars and, sometimes, to adjoining tombs. In addition, this relief expressed Alfonso X’s filial affection.
