The genesis of the current Sevillian cathedral begins with the initial adaptation of the mosque built by the Almohads in the second half of the 12th century, a fact that conditioned not only its location, but its truly colossal dimensions. After the conquest of Seville by Ferdinand III the Saint and for a century and a half, the austere Almohad building served as a Christian temple, a rather forced adaptation that finally led to its total renovation. Despite this, important parts of the old mosque still remain that allow us to know with enough certainty what its shape and characteristics were. These are typical of the great Almohad oratories, whose most significant examples are found in North Africa and in which we can find other keys to know what that monumental building was like.
