After making a number of important contributions to the study of Spanish historical phonology and inflectional morphology. Ray Harris-Northall turned his attention to a series of issues relevant to the standardization processes undergone by Castilian in the late medieval and early modern period. These processes apply almost exclusively to the written language (the only register of past stages in a language's history to wich the modern language historian has direct access) and consist, in large part, of the elimination (or at least severe reduction) of variation, especially with regard to orthographic practices and lexical selection.
