In the article that is presented, a characterization of the current state of the steel chain and its derivatives in Cuba is made. It is part of a joint investigation of the Laboratory of Logistics and Production Management, LOGESPRO of the Technological University of Havana José A. Echeverría (CUJAE) with the Ministry of Industries MINDUS and the associated entities of the steel sector. The scope of the research covers the study of the production of steel and its derivatives at the national level and its relations with the international market. The mapping of the macro chains is carried out, which in both cases begins with planning and imports, both of other raw materials, supplies, equipment and resources necessary for production that are not produced in the country. Each link represents the organizations responsible for the activities that guarantee the production chain: they produce, transport, distribute, research, market, consume and others. In addition, the critical variables to be resolved, the actors involved, the R&D&I (Research + Development + Innovation) centers and the final consumers are identified. The study is based on techniques such as the interview with specialists in the sector, the observation of the production process, the use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Visio, Minitab 17. As a result of this first analysis, the qualitative characterization of the macro chains of steel and its derivatives were obtained, as well as the representation in each case. The investigation will continue until obtaining the management model that should characterize the management of the steel supply chain in the country.
