España y Occidente: el interés nacional y la proyección marítima

    «Occidente» es un concepto institucional de naciones que comparten valores y que sostienen un orden internacional liberal basado en reglas. Actualmente ese orden liberal que sustenta el sistema de relaciones internacionales sufre graves retos, un sistema en el que España tiene un interés fundamental en su continuidad. Sin embargo, tanto la posición excéntrica de España en «Occidente», en parte elegida, como la carencia de una cultura estratégica sólida, complican la determinación y la puesta en práctica de las líneas de acción necesarias para la defensa del interés nacional. Así, se requiere de una definición clara de los intereses nacionales, de cómo estos se proyectan hacia el exterior y de las acciones a tomar para mantenerlos en el tiempo, todo lo cual en una forma principal está ligado a la proyección marítima de España.

    "The West" is an institutional concept of nations that share values and support a liberal, rules-based international order. The liberal order that underpins the system of international relations is currently facing serious challenges, a system in which Spain has a fundamental interest in its continuity. However, both Spain’s eccentric position in the "West" partly by choice, and the lack of a solid strategic culture, complicate the determination and the implementation of the lines of action needed to guard the national interest. Thus, a clear determination of national interests is required, on how those are projected outwards, and of the required courses of action to be taken to sustain them over time, all of which is deeply linked to Spain’s maritime projection.
