The agricultural activity of the department of Chocó in the north Pacific of Colombia has been based on the implementation of traditional production practices that to date have been poorly documented and differentiated. The objective of this research was to typify and characterize the agroforestry production systems present in three municipalities of the department (Quibdó, Unión Panamericana and Unguía). Semi-structured surveys were interviewed and applied to 82 producers from these municipalities. This information was supplemented with available literature and field visits. In addition, descriptive statistics, and multivariate analysis (Ward's method and principal components) were performed. Three (3) types of agroecosystems that represent the study variables: Mixed Home Garden (HCM), Traditional Farms (FT) and Silvopastoral Systems (SSP). Two (2) main components were defined based on the floristic arrangement and representativeness of the systems: 1) small productive units in the center of the Department (Quibdó and Unión Panamericana) with species shared between the HCM and the traditional farms FT; 2) large productive units with agroforestry and silvopastoral systems SSP (Unguía). The main uses of the species in productive systems are food, medicine and timber. The HCM presented the greatest floristic diversity, compared to the FT and silvopastoral systems. It is concluded that the productive systems of Chocó are based on a marked traditionality, high diversity and low productivity, whose area tends to increase as it advances towards the north of the Department.
