    My main argument in this chapter will be the following one: the problem with contemporary naturalism regarding the study of the human way of being, as it is organized in concentric circles around a central cognitivist core, is that it promotes,by an undue transference of points of view, methodologies and assumptions, a univocal and simplistic epistemological approach on what it means to be human. What I would like to critically address in this paper is, more specifically, and following a biranian approach, the “implicit metaphysics” of such an option. I will finish arguing that Maine de Biran’s approach to the irrepresentable dimension of the act of thinking is of importance today.

    O meu principal argumento neste capítulo é o seguinte: o problema do naturalismo contemporâneo, enquanto, em relação ao estudo do modo humano de ser, se organiza em torno de um núcleo central cognitivista, é o de promover, por meio de uma transferência ou extensão indevida de metodologias e pontos de vista, uma conceção unívoca e simplista do humano. Investigarei no presente trabalho, assumindo uma perspetiva biraniana,os limites epistemológicos da “opção metafísica” implícita que conduz tal abordagem e defenderei, a este propósito, a atualidade da perspetiva de Maine de Biran sobre a dimensão irrepresentável do ato de pensar.
